Notes: The Spirit of The Cane is an entertaining yet nicely detailed treatise on rum and Cuban Rum in particular. Starting with distilling history in general then going forward to the sugar trade and rum, the authors start to weave a interesting and multifaceted tapestry of Cuban Rum history, development, appreciation and almost every other aspect we can think of to give the reader an unparalleled overview of Cuban Rum, which in the United States is shrouded in mystery and misinformation due to its rarity and some direct obfuscation by some other rum producers. Since the embargo on Cuban products and travel in 1963, it has been hard for anyone to try Cuban rum or learn about it or its culture in the United States and this book does a marvelous job of conveying a lot of information in one volume.

Covering Early History, how Cuban Rum is made, which rums to taste, how and where to taste it in Cuba and  where it is going next, this book provides loads of tips, techniques, and advice on everything someone may want to know in an easily readable and accessible format

Also not to be missed by rum enthusiasts, in general, is the chapter on the history of rum drinks and mixing that deal with both the origins and evolutions of many classic popular rum cocktails and how they came about.

Final Thoughts: One of the best books on Cuban Rum out there and an indispensable guide on it in every way you could imagine
