Notes: As anyone who has studied distilleries and whiskey ones in particular, It is a very fraught business, especially in any area where it is just starting out. Whether this is the physical and occupational risks (Fires from the open flames used in distillation and illumination, competitors or mobs), Floods ( from the necessity of needing to be sited near large bodies of water for both production and transport, among other considerations), or Explosions ( both from within and without). This does not begin to cover the fraught personal and financial dimensions that also made ( and still make today to some degree) distilling not for the faint of heart or stomach for risk.

This is proven time and again in the rich and entertaining history that Mr. Braunberg has written. Replete with well-researched but evocative stories of the early history of Texas distilling, covering the period from its earliest inception ( around 1660 to prohibition, shuttered the last of the legal distilleries until the recent renaissance brought about by the craft distilling industry.

Final Thoughts: An excellent and entertainingly written history by written by an erudite researcher and distiller himself. It provides an informative and engaging read on a unique industry and window in time. Highly recommend!
It should be made a cautionary bedtime story for would-be distillers.
